A daughter of Frostfire miners herself, the knowhow, courage and skills of Orichalcum mining were seared into Kathy's bones from a young age. A natural-born leader, it was not long before Kathy found herself leading her own crew where her instinct for danger and strong sense of compassion served everyone well.

If challenges out here were only of the geological kind, mining at Frostfire would be bad enough. But Orichalcum's usefulness attracts more dangerous threats: bandits or, if Kathy is unlucky, more organized evils. She and her men have learned how to work a sword and shield as well as any drill.
Kathy's caring, well-run operation is seen by the Dawn Alliance as a breath of fresh air in a cutthroat industry, and earned the respect of Dawn leaders like Logan. In Kathy, the Dawn Alliance sees a natural ally willing to put people above profits and in return they have worked to secure her much better mining equipment.

But Kathy's outfit has never been the largest in Frostfire. That honor belongs to Antaeus' crew and his mysterious backers who have funded him with every advance in technology plus a heavily armed mercenary force. Antaeus has been the chief antagonist in Frostfire since he arrived with the hostility of a whirlwind. When Antaeus' offer to buy out all the other sites were rejected, he turned to less peaceful means. Antaeus' mercenaries overran the less well-defended crews. But Frostfire also has a habit of swallowing up people that do not respect its unpredictable ways. Kathy and her ragtag allies worked with the earthquake-prone terrain to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. An uneasy truce was established... but everybody knew it could not last.

Once again, chaos has come to Frostfire Mine. This time, a series of earthquakes has caved in many sites. Only Antaeus seems protected—allegedly they are the only crew able to repel the "Ancient One". Frostfire has always been heavy with rumors of a great underground beast who stirs the earth. Each stirring brings fresh quakes, tragedy, and ruin. Antaeus claims only his mines are outfitted with a kind of "beast repellent" that prevents the entity from approaching his sites. For many small-time crews, this promise of protection was the last straw required to force them to sign on Antaeus' dotted line—even if his wages aren't nearly as good.

Kathy has heard about legendary entities since she was old enough to sit by a campfire, and has never once believed them. Kathy's instincts led her down a very different path and to the real culprit of the disasters, but she could not have done so without the help of a trustworthy Chief and Explorer. In return, a grateful Kathy has agreed to lend her vast expertise to the lucky Chief's own City.
